What Lethal Company got right
Lethal Company's genius was making greed the enemy. The quota forces you deeper than is sensible, and proximity voice chat turns your own panic into the soundtrack. Nothing below is a criticism of it - it is the reference point the whole genre now works against.
If you want more of that exact loop, R.E.P.O. is the closest match and we cover it on the R.E.P.O. comparison.
Where Blood Moon Horror differs
- 8 players, not 4. Most co-op horror caps at four. Blood Moon Horror runs 1-8, so the full group stays in one lobby - and proximity voice gets substantially harder to manage.
- A mission, not a quota. You are not hitting a number. Lunar Base Alpha is the objective: restore power, bring failing systems back, solve electrical problems, recover NovaTech evidence, then extract.
- No weapons at all. Lethal Company lets you improvise. Blood Moon Horror does not. There is no shovel moment coming.
- Light is a third detection channel. Threats react to sound and movement, as you would expect - and to light. Your flashlight is the thing keeping you alive and the thing giving you away.
- The threats are machines, not aliens. Corrupted station hardware after the Red Horizon incident. Older third-party listings calling them extraterrestrial are out of date.
What a run actually looks like
A Lethal Company run is shaped by the clock and the quota. A Blood Moon Horror run is shaped by the base: you arrive at Lunar Base Alpha with systems failing, and the mission is to bring them back far enough to leave with what you came for.
In practice that means splitting up - which is where 8 players and proximity voice chat start working against you. Two people trace a fault to a junction while someone holds a corridor and calls out what they can hear. Restoring power lights rooms that were safely dark a moment ago. Progress is not neutral here: every system you bring back changes what can find you, which is the trade the whole game is built on.
The puzzle guide documents the electrical objectives from the shipping build if you want to know what you are walking into.
Squad size is the real dividing line
This is the practical reason most groups end up here. Lethal Company caps at 4. If your Discord regularly has six or seven people around, someone sits out or you split into two lobbies and lose the shared story of the night.
Blood Moon Horror runs 1-8. That is not just a bigger number - it changes the texture. Eight voices on proximity chat in a dark corridor is genuinely harder to manage than four, and coordinating a split across a facility is a different problem than keeping a quartet together. If your group is four or fewer, this advantage does not apply to you and Lethal Company's tighter design may simply suit you better.
Which should your squad play tonight?
Play Lethal Company if you want fast, funny, chaotic runs, a group of four or fewer, and a night where losing badly is the point.
Play Blood Moon Horror if your group is bigger than four, if you want tension from silence and darkness rather than scrap value, and if you like that nobody can fight back. It is slower and more deliberate - closer to a heist where the building is trying to notice you.
Be aware it is Early Access and still changing: the roadmap is public and the update articles log what has shipped. Full systems breakdown is on the game info page, and the lore page explains what happened to the base.
Questions, answered plainly
Is Blood Moon Horror just a Lethal Company clone?
No. It shares proximity voice chat and the extraction-run shape, but it runs 8 players instead of 4, replaces the scrap quota with restoring a lunar base, removes improvised weapons entirely, and adds light as a detection channel alongside sound and movement.
Can you play Blood Moon Horror solo?
Yes. It supports 1 to 8 players, so solo runs work, though the proximity voice chat and split-up objectives are built with a squad in mind.
Which is scarier, Lethal Company or Blood Moon Horror?
Different fears. Lethal Company is chaotic and comedic under pressure. Blood Moon Horror is quieter and more deliberate - you have no way to fight back, so tension comes from managing light, noise and distance.
What are the system requirements?
Blood Moon Horror is Windows PC only, via Steam. Current requirements are listed in full on the game info page and on the Steam store listing.
